Saturday September 16 at 6pm CEST: Experimenting with tense and perspective with Mathangi Subramanian
Unlock the power of tense and perspective to shape narrative distance in this 2-hour workshop with award-winning writer Mathangi Subramanian. Among other things, we’ll look at:
Understand the ways in which different tenses and perspectives lessen and increase the distance between reader and writer.
Identify experimental perspectives, including second person address and collective first person.
Apply what we've learned about tense and perspective to make choices that serve our intentions for our own work.
Mathangi Subramanian is a neurodiverse, South Asian American writer and educator. Her novel A People's History of Heaven was a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award and was longlisted for the PEN/Faulkner Award and the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize, among others.

October 7 at 6pm CET: Writing sex scenes that sizzle with Deirdre Mendoza
Join author Deirdre Mendoza for a 2-hour deep dive into what makes sex scenes sizzle, exploring passion, power and surprise
We’ll begin by exploring intimacy in selected scenes created by writers such as Carmen Maria Machado, Mary Gaitskill, Sally Rooney, Taffy Brodesner-Akner, James Baldwin, and D.H. Lawrence, and look at the ways in which a well-crafted sex scene can inform character, advance narrative, and add layers to your story. Together we’ll answer the question: What makes a sex scene sizzle instead of fizzle?
Some of the ideas we’ll explore in this interactive workshop:
Are your characters driven by love, passion, obligation, or simply desire?
Which story elements or details make a scene particularly sensual or erotic?
What happens in the shower, or the backseat of the car, or the empty tennis court, that changes the power dynamics between characters, or adds to the readers’ understanding of authorial intent?
DEIRDRE MENDOZA'S short story collection, Real Lives of Married People, was published in 2022 (8-Fold Press). Her culture stories and essays have appeared in Ms. Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, WWD, Variety, TheBeet.com, and The Miami New Times, among others. She holds a B.A. from Hampshire College, an MFA from Antioch University, Los Angeles, and has written for film and television. She is the creator of a short-form, comedic web series, Dogged, which was recognized in competition at festivals such as The Austin Film Festival.
