Announcing No Place Is An Island, a new, global literary festival on Bornholm Island in Denmark
Join us July 12-13 for readings, nature and friendly literary conversations with six global poetry and fiction writers
Coming this summer: We’re launching a literary festival!
After a year of intense preparation we are thrilled to launch No Place Is An Island, a new literary festival on Denmark’s sunniest island, Bornholm, July 12-13, 2024. Organized by The Write Salon in partnership with Danish creative hub Kjøllergaard, this festival celebrates the joy of storytelling and the thrill of travel in a beautiful island setting surrounded by nature.
Six authors, two days, one iconic island
No Place Is An Island brings together six voices from around the world in four special events around Bornholm Island. Our welcoming, inclusive events showcase both up-and-coming talents and established literary voices, spanning diverse genres including speculative fiction, poetry, comedic novels, and gothic tales.
Friday July 12
📖 Opening night live poetry with Lemn Sissay: Reading and conversation with acclaimed British-Ethiopian poet, speaker, and playwright Lemn Sissay. Come get inspired with us Friday, July 12 at 7pm at Bornholm Island’s coolest farm and creative hub, Kjollergaard.
Saturday July 13
🌊 Morning beach readings with Kit Fan & Stephen Buoro: What better way to start your Bornholm beach day than with poetry and fiction? Join us Saturday, July 13 at 11am at Sydøst for Paradis, a laid-back beachfront cafe, for readings, discussion and casual mingling with the authors.
📖 Afternoon fiction with Ursula Scavenius: After enjoying a picnic on the beach with new literary friends, come for a taste of afternoon fiction with esteemed Danish short story writer, Ursula Scavenius. We’ll gather for this event at Olivarius Bookstore in the nearby fishing village of Svaneke.
🧟♀️ Modern gothic night and drinks with Johanna Sinisalo & K.C. Mead-Brewer: The closing event will take place at a creative and unexpected venue, Kinohotel. Surrounded by scenography designed by the Danish artist Thomas Hejlesen, Finnish writer Johanna Sinisalo and American K.C. Mead-Brewer will conjure a spirited reading and discussion focused on speculative fiction and horror writing. After the event, we’ll close the festival with casual mingling, drinks and snacks.
Why Bornholm?
Our founding member, Vanessa Fabiano, now residing in Copenhagen, was previously part of Bornholm’s entrepreneurial community through her food company, Nordikos Bornholm. Her strong connection to the island inspired the idea of starting a global literary festival on Bornholm.
We can't wait for you to join us at Europe's coziest new literary festival this summer!🍷🌊
All our best,
Giedre, Vanessa and Willow
